Squirrel & Wildlife Education for Spokane-Area Homeowners
Understanding what an animal is doing around your home can help you choose a practical next step. This guide explains prevention, why identification matters, and when a wildlife professional can help.
Wildlife trapping is not currently offered by Backwoods
Backwoods Pest Control does not currently provide tree-squirrel, raccoon or other wildlife trapping and removal services. We are working toward obtaining the credentials needed to offer this work again. Until those credentials are in place and we announce availability, we are referring these inquiries to another provider.
Our wildlife-trapping referral
For wildlife trapping and removal inquiries, contact Vernon Craig at Tahoma Pest Control: 509-978-7830.
Please contact Vernon directly to confirm the species and location he can assist with, service availability, methods and pricing. Tahoma Pest Control is a separate provider; its services are not included in a Backwoods service agreement.
For mice and rats, see our rodent control services. For pocket gophers, ground squirrels, moles and voles, see our burrowing pest information, service options and DIY guidance. Available methods depend on the species, property and applicable requirements.
Start with identification: tree squirrel or ground squirrel?
Seeing a squirrel on the ground does not make it a ground squirrel: tree squirrels also forage there. Tree use, burrow activity and where an animal enters a building are clues, not a certain identification. Pocket gophers, ground squirrels and tree squirrels need different approaches. Before acting, identify the animal and the problem it is causing.
Practical prevention you can work on
- Stop feeding squirrels and reduce access to birdseed. A suitable feeder baffle can help.
- Look from ground level for damaged vents, loose siding and roof-edge gaps. Arrange safe repairs after confirming animals are out.
- Reduce access from vegetation near buildings. Use a qualified professional for high branches or work near utility lines.
- Address food and shelter together. Removing one squirrel leaves an opportunity for another if attractants and openings remain.

Animal in the attic? Do not simply seal the hole
First establish the species, its entry points and whether dependent young are present. Closing an occupied opening or using a one-way exit without that check can leave animals trapped inside or separate young from their mother. Have an appropriate wildlife professional assess occupied spaces before exclusion or repairs.
Record where and when you notice activity and describe it to the provider. Avoid entering an unsafe attic, handling wildlife or disturbing a nest. Animals inside buildings may damage insulation or wiring; difficult access, contamination and possible young are reasons to get professional help. Sick or injured wildlife needs guidance from an appropriate wildlife rehabilitator or agency.
See WDFW’s guidance on animals in buildings.
Washington and Idaho: check before trapping or relocating
Do not assume an animal can be trapped and released elsewhere just because it is on your property. Requirements depend on the species, location and method. For Washington properties, contact your WDFW regional office for current guidance.
For Idaho properties, check with Idaho Fish and Game before attempting wildlife removal. Its tree-squirrel damage guidance describes agency involvement and written instructions for removal of protected tree squirrels. Idaho also has protected ground-squirrel species; identify the animal before selecting a control method. Washington guidance does not establish what is allowed in Idaho.
Common questions
Does a squirrel in my yard need to be removed?
A sighting alone is different from an animal entering a building or causing damage. Start by describing the actual problem and reducing attractants. The aim is to reduce conflict, not promise a yard with no wildlife.
Can I use the pocket-gopher bait instructions for squirrels?
No. Our pocket-gopher DIY guide is specific to pocket gophers and the named product’s label. Do not apply those instructions to tree squirrels or other animals.
Does Backwoods offer wildlife trapping?
Not currently. We are working toward the necessary credentials, with no start date announced. For wildlife-trapping inquiries, contact Vernon Craig at Tahoma Pest Control, 509-978-7830. Confirm his service area, species, availability and pricing directly.
What about ground squirrels or pocket gophers?
See our burrowing pest page for education, available options, property requirements and per-visit pricing. Those services do not include tree-squirrel or other wildlife trapping.
About the rodent information below
General rodent-service information elsewhere on this page concerns Backwoods mice-and-rat services, not wildlife trapping or the independent referral provider.
Education reviewed September 22, 2026. Confirm current species-specific requirements with the appropriate state agency before acting.

How much does a rodent treatment service from Backwoods Pest Control cost? After inspecting your property, we provide a written quote that identifies the service areas, equipment, planned visits, and any separately priced work. An iQ-equipped program may cost more than a basic bait-station service because it adds activity data and technician review. We will explain what that added work is meant to accomplish. The final price depends on the property and the agreed scope; we do not claim to be the lowest-priced option.
-
How often will you treat my Spokane home or business for rodents?Visit timing follows rodent activity and your written agreement. For Sentinel, we begin with equipment setup and an included follow-up approximately 30 days later. Active rodent control may require more frequent visits; ongoing maintenance follows the agreed schedule. Monthly program payments do not mean a technician visits every month. We explain whether a requested extra visit is included or separately quoted before scheduling it.
-
Why should I trust Backwoods Pest Control to treat my Spokane property for rodents? We inspect the property, explain the signs we find, and give you a written plan for equipment, service areas, follow-up, and price. In an iQ-equipped program, our technician reviews timestamped device activity at visits to guide adjustments; the system does not send live alerts. We explain placement and precautions around children and pets, and we stand behind the work described in your agreement. Rodent control usually takes ongoing attention, so we will not promise instant or permanent elimination.

We have struggled with earwigs in our home and snakes in our yard, even coming into our garage. We tried a door-to-door pest control company for over a year, but they weren’t able to resolve the issue, even with retreatments. My husband called Backwoods Pest Control and Brian came out to do a consult for us and gave us some snake scram granules the same day, knowing we were having a major issue. He was very knowledgeable and outlined a comprehensive plan to help us. We haven’t seen a snake since (we had been seeing multiple snakes each day up to that point). We signed up for the service and less than a week later, Krista came out. She was so friendly and kind and listened to our concerns, making adjustments based on the information we gave her about where we’ve been seeing bugs, etc. She let us know what to expect and was also able to tell us why our past treatments for earwigs hadn’t worked. We already saw dead bugs in treated areas before she even finished treating the rest of the house. We highly recommend Backwoods Pest Control!- Ryan & Katie Petrik
