Pocket-Gopher DIY Guide

Managing pocket gophers takes observation and persistence. This guide explains a hand-probe approach using Kaput-D Pocket Gopher Bait (EPA Reg. No. 72500-9) and a Big Boy bait applicator. It does not apply to ground squirrels, moles, or voles. Elimination is not guaranteed, and activity can continue or return over multiple seasons or years.

Confirm that the product and use are permitted at your location and that protected wildlife will not be harmed.

Do Washington homeowners need an applicator license?

A homeowner using this specific, non-restricted-use Kaput-D product with a hand probe on their own residential property generally does not need a Washington pesticide applicator license. The pesticide label still applies. This guidance does not cover applying pesticides for hire, treating someone else’s property, or restricted-use products. Before you begin

Wear the label-required long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes, socks, and waterproof gloves. The label gives nitrile rubber gloves at least 14 mils thick as an example. Keep children, pets, livestock, and other wildlife away from bait and equipment.

This bait can poison mammals and birds. Animals that eat poisoned gophers may also be poisoned. Underground placement does not make the product harmless. Do not apply where surface water is present, contaminate water, or place bait where it could contaminate food or food-contact surfaces.

Identify buried utilities, irrigation, and other underground hazards before inserting a probe. Do not probe where safe clearance is uncertain.

1. Identify and record fresh activity

Pocket gophers commonly leave low, fan-shaped mounds with a plugged opening near an edge. A mound is a clue to an underground tunnel, not a place to scatter bait. If you are unsure which animal is responsible, establish its identity before treating.

Record or mark fresh mound locations before gently leveling the loose surface soil. Leveling helps you recognize later activity; it does not control the animal. Preserve enough information about the mound and plug location to guide your search.

2. Locate the tunnel

The label describes the main burrow as typically about 18 inches from the mound and within 10 inches of the surface. These are typical locations, not exact measurements for every tunnel.

Probe carefully around the mound area. Working in a consistent direction, such as clockwise, can help you keep track of where you have checked. Clockwise searching is an organizational technique, not a requirement of the bait label. A noticeable decrease in resistance can indicate that the probe has entered a tunnel. Do not dispense bait unless you have confirmed entry into the gopher tunnel.

3. Apply the labeled amount below ground

For a hand-probe applicator, Method 4 on the reviewed label directs the user to penetrate the tunnel, follow the applicator instructions, and dispense one-half cup of bait into the gopher burrow.

Check your probe's output before treating

With our Big Boy probe and the Kaput-D bait we use, we find that approximately five complete cycles dispense half a cup. One complete cycle means moving the handle from its normal closed position fully open and then back to fully closed. This describes our equipment's output, not a guaranteed setting for every applicator. Measure your own probe's output before relying on a cycle count.

Follow the applicator's instructions for checking output. If it can be operated safely into a collection container without overriding a safety feature, use this contained measurement check:

1. Wear all label-required protective clothing and gloves. Work away from food, drains, children, pets, and wildlife, in a sheltered area where spilled grain can be fully contained.
2. Use a dry, pesticide-only catch container inside a larger tray and a clearly marked pesticide-only half-cup measure. Never return these items to food use.
3. Hold the probe securely in its normal operating orientation with the outlet over the catch container, clear of its bottom. Keep hands away from the point and moving parts. Collect all bait while counting complete closed-open-closed cycles; start by checking five cycles.
4. Measure the collected bait by volume against the half-cup measure. A half cup is a volume, not four ounces by weight. If output differs, use the manufacturer's adjustment or calibration directions to establish delivery of the labeled amount. Do not round up to an extra cycle that exceeds the dose.
5. Repeat the check to confirm consistent delivery. Recheck when changing bait or after a blockage, adjustment, or repair. If the output remains inconsistent, stop using the applicator until the problem is corrected.
6. Account for all collected bait and spills. Keep reusable bait secured in the original labeled container if clean and uncontaminated; handle contaminated bait and equipment cleanup according to the label. Do not leave bait in the measuring equipment or exposed on the ground.

If your applicator cannot be checked this way safely or its instructions prohibit it, obtain the manufacturer's calibration procedure instead. Do not bypass any safety mechanism.

If the applicator will not dispense properly, stop and follow its maintenance instructions. Do not compensate by blindly adding more handle cycles.

4. Close the probe hole

Remove the applicator and close the remaining opening with a sod plug or by pressing the opening closed as directed on the label. Keep bait in the underground tunnel. Address any spilled bait immediately according to the label so it is not accessible on the surface.

5. Monitor and follow the retreatment directions

Keep a dated record of treated areas. Check for fresh mounds and level loose mound soil after recording new activity so later changes are easier to recognize.

Monitoring frequently does not mean adding bait every time you see a mound. Method 4 of the reviewed label says to treat again if fresh mounds appear after two to three weeks. Follow the timing and directions on your own container. Do not count each mound as a separate animal or automatically treat it as a separate burrow system.

The two-to-three-week interval is a retreatment instruction, not a promise that your property will be gopher-free. Continued monitoring and properly timed treatment may be needed long term.

Cleanup, storage, and exposure

Wearing waterproof gloves, collect and properly dispose of dead animals and leftover bait as directed. Follow label instructions for cleaning equipment, handling wash water, and disposal. Never use bait-handling equipment for food. Store bait in its original, closed container in a cool, dry location inaccessible to children and pets.

For suspected human exposure, contact a poison control center or doctor immediately and follow the label's first-aid instructions. For suspected animal poisoning, contact a veterinarian immediately. Have the container or label available. Do not wait for symptoms.
